ISBN-0-7316-5440-4 - The Brisbane River is the city's greatest untapped resource. Changes in technology have meant the once bustling waterfront of the city became an eyesore of rotting, deserted wharves. These facilities effectively cut the river off from the city, and the river had very little use... but all this has changed. Brisbane's Year of the River in 1987 was an attempt to focus public interest on the river. Council made it clear that riverside development was desirable, but any development should give the public access to the riverfront day and night. Developers were encouraged to include features of benefit to the public such as walkways, piazzas, open air dining areas, ferry landings and boat facilties. The river is being used more and more as a recreation facility and transport corridor. The Council is presently looking at extensions of bikeways and devleopment of open space along the river to add to those which already exist. In time the Brisbane River will be recognised for the important asset it is and assume its role in having Brisbane recognised as the River City. A great insight into the Brisbane River.
