The Author working in the Gunpowder industry collecting so many rare books and manuscripts decided to provide a selection in one book for the invention, manufacture, examination and first use of Gunpowder, and also providing credit to the Scientists and discoverers. Many of the works covered in this book no longer exist in the original and others are extremely rare. Beginning with Roger Bacon born in 1214 a master Scientist and Astrologer working under harsh conditions sometimes imprisoned, when his book is published ingredients are hidden within anagrams and are still being deciphered when this book was written. Contents include formulas for gunpowder, Berthold Schwarz, saltpetre, sulphur, charcoal, other ingredients of gunpowder, manufacture of gunpowder, alchymistic symbols in gunpowder manufacture, tests for gunpowder, the oldest guns, the master gunners, men of note of modern times. Plates and text include making individual ingredients, a 1570 engraving of casting of guns, tread wheel lathe, perhaps the oldest picture of the refining of saltpetre. Fig 14 shows a priest [Berthold Schwarz} credited with being the inventor of the first firearm sometime before 1325 with exploding crucible mortar in mid air and the devil to his left laughing as he accidentally discovers gunpowder. IIlustrated are the oldest gun, Medfaa, Arabian guns, many workshop scenes, gunpowder testers, stamp mills and gunpowder factory scenes. Text provides a wonderful insight into the earliest history of Gunpowder, cannon and guns.
