The bulk of this biography, which covers Coates' youth and World War I service, inter-war medical career and early WWII service, details his experiences as a prisoner of war of the Japanese, including his work on the Burma Railway. Details of his experiences were written during captivity on scraps of paper and covers his medical work in the camps. The last section deals with his return from captivity, his evidence at the War Trials Tribunal, his work in rehabilitating prisoners of war and his dedication to the profession of medicine. Loosely inserted is a typed copy of Newman's speech delivered on 10 November 1977 when the book was launched.
