After his battalion had been surrounded by German tanks near St Valery in June 1940, Broad led seven Seaforth Highlanders to safety through France and across the Pyranees into Spain, and back to England. Broad was then recruited by SOE and sent to Madagascar. Following two operations there, he transfered to Combined Operations, carrying out cross-Channel raids under Mountbatten. He also trained his Number 10 Commando Crossbow Force for the destruction of V-bomb sites. He was later dropped into France to help organise and arm the Maquis.
