VERY SCARCE, out-of-print SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. This is the cardcover first edition of the long out-of-print hardcover first edition. History of the peacetime, wartime and demise during the Pacific War of all ships operated by Japanese O.S.K. and Mitsui Lines, the author interviewed some 170 surviving Japanese seamen from sunken vessels and has included b/w photos and statistics of each vessel plus 23 pages of additional plates, Eight of these being full-colour reproductions of dramatic wartime paintings, text in Japanese with English translation of text and captions, includes a history of the M.V. Montevideo Maru 1926-1942 which was sunk by the U.S. Submarine Sturgeon SS187 (illustrated) on June 22, 1942 some 65 miles west of Cape Bojeador, Luzon, Philippines. LISTER'S NOTE : Subsequent to the publication of this book, an aged Japanese crew member survivor of the sinking of the Montevideo Maru reported to an independent source that some of the 1157 Australian military, missionaries and civilian prisoners of war (captured by the Japanese in Rabaul New Guinea in January 1942) on board were issued with life jackets and rescued by a Japanese destroyer and taken to Japan later to be murdered by the Japanese military deep down in an offshore Japanese owned coal mine just prior to the 1945 surrender .
