Drawing on the recollections of survivors, this tells of the battle of Porton Plantation, where the men of the 31/51 Battalion fought against the Japanese on the island of Bougainville in June 1945. The author's father, Captain Clyde Downs, was one of the 26 Australian servicemen who lost their lives in the clash. Fought over 72 hours, the battle began on June 8, 1945, and resulted in a casualty rate of 56 per cent. Other units that fought in the battle were 42 Aust Landing Craft Coy RAE, 19 Aust Field Ambulance, 16 Aust Field Coy RAE, 4 Aust Field Regt RAA, and 223 Aust Depot Supply Platoon.
