LAST ITEM HELD MATCHING THIS TITLE STATED:

London: Hurst & Blackett, 1906. 8vo. original red cloth (spine faded, worn & reattached, boards rubbed & marked, hinges broken but crudely repaired, leaves thumbed & a little marked, but quite clean internally); pp. xvi, 530, with numerous illustrations & maps, inc. a large colour foldout map (slightly torn & stained). A reading copy only, but with a unique association. This copy was part of MacKellar's Library, a collection donated by a sponsor, William McKellar, which accompanied Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition in 1911, with an rsm stating this to FFE, and a handwritten note signed 'Wm C.W. MacKellar' in pencil to front pastedown. This is an interesting work on Tibetan travel and history in its own right, but the association with Mawson's Expedition makes this a unique copy. The MacKellar Library is described in 'The Home of the Blizzard', and another work on the British 1903-1904 Mission to Lhasa (Candler's 'The Unveiling of Lhasa') is directly referenced by Mawson; it is interesting to speculate whether he may have confused the titles. Notwithstanding its faults, this is a unique peice of Antarctic heritage, and it certainly looks as if had spent a winter there under extreme conditions!. Association Copy. New and Revised Edition.
