LAST ITEM HELD MATCHING THIS TITLE STATED:

London. T. Fisher Unwin. FIRST EDITION. 1887. xlii+109pp. Gilt top-edge, fore- and bottom edges untrimmed. Imitation crocodile skin boards. Cloth lightly rubbed, neat (contemporary) inscription on front endpaper, otherwise very good. The UK edition precedes the 1st US edition by three years. An early collection of howlers, used by Twain as an excuse to pass judgement on the standards of contemporary education. Some ("A Republican is a sinner mentioned in the Bible") have striking contemporary relevance, some ("Some of the best fossils are found in theological cabinets") are simply true, while some turn up in similar collections even today ("Milton's married life was not happy, he married three wives in succession").
