Oxford University Press Australia 1st edition 2002. Hard cover dust wrapper 280pp b&w photos. Fine (new book). In the early 1900s, as Minister for Defence, McCay had introduced far ranging reforms of the Australian Army's command structure. As a militia officer, he commanded the Intelligence Corps (1907) and had nurtured the career of his friend and protege, John Monash. At the outbreak of war, he was given command of the the 2nd Infantry Brigade, and led his men at Gallipoli and Krithia. To all intents and purposes, he seemed destined for a distinguished military career, yet despite his determination and personal courage, by 1918 he had been relegated to a training command in England and was revilled by many who served under him. In contrast, Monash had won distrinction commanding the AIF in France. Wray examines the life of McCay and his relationship with Monash and seeks to discover whether McCay was brought down by the failures of others, or by his own personality.
