Faber & Faber, London, 1944. hardcover, 5" x 7½", with dust jacket. Book produced during wartime economy standards. Edge-wear to jacket. Pages discolouring. Book in VERY GOOD condition. This book includes a mystery: the 'Contents' page lists a frontispiece illustration, 'Map of Mergui Harbour', yet this copy has no frontispiece (or any signs of its removal). But the bigger mystery deals with Mergui, once a British possession in southern Burma, and the seventeenth-century scandal and fraud perpetuated there by Englishmen, Samuel White, Francis Davenport and Captain Anthony Weltden. The author, once a resident at Mergui, searches the India Office Library records for explanations (recorded in this present work.)
